Tried And Tested: Facial Hair Removal With Besan (Gramflour) & Turmeric

Every mother, grandmother, aunt talks about this hair removal method. But, I never actually believed this works. So, I finally decided to put it to test and now I'm here with my review and experience.

Basically, this method involves making a mixture of besan (gramflour in English) and haldi (turmeric) with any liquid like milk, yogurt, rosewater etc. Then you apply it and let it dry completely. After it dries start rubbing it off in circular motions. Fine facial hair stick to the dried mixture and come right off.

My experience: I do have fine hair on my cheeks and forehead. But, they are not very visible so I never bothered removing them. The only thing that annoys me with these facial hair is that, when you wear foundation or BB cream the hair becomes visible and makes the face look cakey. This is the first time I attempted to remove them. After the mixture dried off, I started rubbing it off. It's actually hard to rub it off. I peeled a big piece off and inspected it. To my surprise, it had tiny hair stuck to it. After rubbing all of it off, my face was red. Obviously, due to all the rubbing. But, it works. It removed most of my cheek hair and forehead looks clear too. It didn't remove any upper lip hair. So, don't count on that. But, it works perfectly on the cheeks, forehead, jawline. This is just in the first attempt. I'm happy I tried it and will definitely be doing this more often.

I made a small batch to store it. Sometimes we just get lazy so it's easier to have everything mixed up and ready to use in a small box. So, whenever I want to use it I will just add two teaspoons into a bowl with some milk and apply.

Here's the recipe:
1/4 cup Gramflour (Besan)
2 teaspoons Turmeric

This recipe makes a lot! So, mix it up and store it in a box. Whenever you want to use it, take a separate bowl add two teaspoons from the mixture. Add some milk and make it into a thick paste. Apply a nice thick even layer all over the face. Wait for it to dry completely and then start rubbing it off. Make sure to rub in the opposite direction of your hair growth.

If you're not sure about how your skin will react to this. Do it on a small area of your face first.

Some tips:
  1. Be gentle when rubbing as it might cause redness.
  2. After you finish rubbing most of the mask off, wash your face with warm water to get smaller pieces off.
  3. Apply ice to soothe the skin.
  4. Finish off with your moisturizer.
  5. Do this about two times a week for quicker results.
Have you tried this age old hair removal method? Did it work for you?

  8. Hi ladies, It is my experience- I used besan , but I have more facial hair due to it. It's my experiance, I may be wrong but any kind of scrubbing leads to more hair growth. Then I go through lesar treatment, but no use, hair comes back, little darker too. I never wax, as I have seen hair comes more darker, & skin damaged. I ones use Tinke razor, but again hair comes little darker. Really I don't know solution till date. Bleaching I find safe. Now I do only bleaching. Sometime I think why I tried different way which leads to darker hair. But that's ok. Now I can't do anything. So I wanted to share please if u want to try something try on hand or any other body part. Thank You.

  9. Hi, as I mention above besan leads more hair growth. Any kind of scrubbing leads to more hair growth. There in one more observation- Till I was 15 years old I didn't have any hair. Till then I used to apply moisturizer. But then I listened moisturizer leads to get pimples. So I stopped it. As soon as I stopped applying moisturizer hair started to come. Then I listen it's hormonal imbalance. I acceped that ok it's hormonal imbalance. I haven't apply any moisturizer for many years. Then I got married, I delivered baby girl. & same thing happen with her. Then I thought for 3 years kid it will be not hormonal imbalance. Now I am applying good moisturizer. She has less hair compare to me. Hope this will help to someone.

  10. Very cool read. Thankyou! I love reading different cultural recipes for things. I don't really have that in my english culture. I did grow up however with the influence of many Asian families. I think it is a privilege to learn of other cultures beauty habits. Cheers! From Canada.

  12. I have thing long side burns. Not the 'normal' kind that grows to the bottom of your ear. It's a little under my ears on my cheeks on my face and they hairs are about 2-3 mm long. If I do this for a month will most of the hairs be gone? It runs in my family to have thick hair haha but I don't like the excessive hair on my face.
